Dear typical sibling of a sister or a brother with special needs. This letter is dedicated to you.
Believe me, we did NOT forget you, we are NOT overlooking you, we do NOT want you to miss out, we do NOT want you to suffer!
But in so many ways you had to live a different life, life that was changed and touched by disability. Every day you are out in the world, living with an understanding about the beauty and value of life, an understanding that few people posses. This makes you stand out, it makes you special. You understand so deeply that it isn’t right to discriminate against anyone.
You have extended extra measures of grace, when others have overstepped the line or when others just couldn’t help themselves.
You give smiles and your friendship to those that the world overlooks.
Because you had more responsibility than most of your peers, you are more mature than most kids your age.
You had to make incredible sacrifices, you had to miss out on so many activities, you were treated what seems unfair, you had to give up so many things…..but, we see you, the world sees you! You are a wonderful and lovely person. Your sibling with special needs has affected you and shaped you into the marvelous person you are today.
We are so proud of you, we love you, and often you are what keeps us going. You make our day brilliant and beautiful.
You are encouraging and inspiring to those around you.
As parents, we hope to make the world a better place for our kids. But you as the siblings, with your hearts so full of acceptance and compassion, you will teach the world the value of life, and you will change the world. Not just for your siblings, but for all of us.
Thank you! Thank You! Thank You!
